Structural designer/drafter/eIT

BID Group Construction

This is my current position. I came back to work for BID After leaving to go work at Scouten Engineering. I’ve worked here as a mechanical engineer (Engineer-In-Training) and structural designer/drafter. My current position is as a structural EIT and designer/drafter. My work involves preforming engineering analysis alongside designing and drafting blueprints for steel, concrete, and material handling systems. This job allows me great exposure to many aspects of the construction process. I have been on site taking measurements for retrofit jobs, and been allowed to work shutdowns as a tradesperson on some of those same jobs. I’ve been fortunate enough to have designed a number of different residual conveyors, one of which I had the pleasure of helping to install on site. The flexibility of this position has allowed me to obtain my Red Seal Millwrighting ticket with my latest position working at Nechacko Mechanical building some of the sawmill machinery I design structural supports for in the office.

Scouten Engineering

I worked here as a structural E.I.T. and project manager. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside a great group of people in this role. Having to manage several projects at once, I found my organizational abilities being tested. This position gave me exposure to writing proposals, interfacing with clients and managing overlapping schedules and challenging timelines. All projects that I was in charge of managing also required my engineering design and analysis before being sent to the drafting team to create detailed drawings. I also took on the role of drafter and prepared detailed drawings on some time-sensitive projects. Scouten Engineering fosters a culture of teaching, inclusion and kindness that I appreciated while in their employ.

Millwright

Nechacko Mechanical

This position involved building sawmill machinery as a part of the BID Group of Companies. A truly great place to work for those interested in building amazing machines. In my opinion, the great management and supervision here provides an above average work environment, and allows apprentices and those less experienced to get valuable experience in multiple trades. I help fabricate machinery, designed by Comact and other members of the BID Group of Companies, that spans entire sawmills.

Deltech

I worked here welding/fabricating/assembling parts for the lumber industry’s dry kilns and energy systems. I enjoyed working on a great crew and learning to weld aluminum. I was able to get a cwb ticket for aluminum welding while I was here.

Parallel Welding Fabrication / Parallel Mechanical

In this position I spent most of my time working as a contractor millwright at a sawmill of Tolko industries Ltd. in High Level Alberta. My job involved maintenance and inspection of sawmill machinery. This job required the ability to handle stressful situations while responding to breakdowns of machinery during the sawmill’s production time.

Parallel Wood products

Parallel Wood Products is a mill that produces finger jointed studs from recycled trim ends. I worked a short time as a millwright during production time, responding to calls and breakdowns in order to keep the mill up and running. My favourite aspect of this position was responding to the unknown, and the excitement that I associated with being completely responsible for the mills success when things went wrong. I only stayed 4 weeks with this company before moving on to a different job, but if external circumstances would have been different, I would have loved to continue working here; it has great people and a great work environment.

Dunkley Lumber Ltd.

I was hired as a junior engineer at Dunkley Lumber. After spending some time working with maintenance management software Avantis and drafting drawings in AutoCAD and Solidworks, I realized that I would have much more to offer the company if I spent some time working hands on with machinery and learning more about the fundamentals of machinery not taught in a standard engineering degree; I worked for a year as an apprentice millwright. I preformed general maintenance and responded to breakdowns in both the planermill and the sawmill. After completing all of my technical training and passing the Interprovincial Red Seal exam, I was moved back into the engineering position where I worked on projects retrofitting existing machinery. I worked with 3D imaging technology (Creaform's HandyScan 700, VxScan, VxModel) to reverse engineer existing parts and created technical drawings of parts to be replicated.  Engaging in communication with the machinists, welders, and millwrights about the projects I was working on allowed me to create the best possible design solutions, often generating ideas I would have never come up with alone.

Labourer

Pepsi Bottling Group

I worked summers in the warehouse at Pepsi building loads of pop and loading the trucks. It was very demanding physical labour. On some nights we would see 14 - 16 hour shifts of constant walking/carrying/lifting. The warehouse crew worked in a small team of 3 or 4 on most days and became very close with each other. When I look back on this job I am thankful for how it strengthened me both physically and mentally

UBC (Hard Landscape Division)

The summer after graduating from university I worked for UBC building/plant operation's hard landscape division. This crew oversaw the maintenance of the University Campuses outdoor environment. Jobs varied day-to-day and depended on the maintenance requests sent in from other departments around the campus. Such jobs included pressure washing buildings/walkways/courtyards, asphalting roadways/sidewalks, concrete cutting, dead animal removal, unclogging piping, cleaning drains, mowing lawns/medians, line trimming, leaf blowing, demolition/cleanup, pool cleaning, etc. The best part of this job was the variety of hands-on work I was exposed to on a daily basis (and working outside in nice weather!)

Field Operator

Enseco

Here I worked as a well testing assistant. Working in a team of two, my assigned supervisors and I set up, ran, maintained, and disassembled 500 lbs pressure vessels and flare stacks during the recovery of crude oil. My job required constant monitoring of the vessel, data recording, assembly and operation of valve and piping networks, and offering assistance to my direct supervisor. I learned to always think one step ahead and be prepared with what was needed. In instances when piping was perforated by the heavy flow of crude oil it was essential that there was no hesitation in executing the steps required to shut down operation and replace the washed-out piping. Safety practices were heavily emphisized in this position.

FMC (Peroxides Division)

In field operations at FMC I worked side-by-side with power engineers to ensure the smooth and continual operation of a hydrogen peroxide plant. During daily rounds I took samples from various locations of the plant which I then analysed in a lab through titration, mass spectrometry, PH tests, and various other tests. I operated a forklift to change totes of various acids and blew down filters, received training for confined spaces and hazardous materials. I also became familiar with P&ID's and PFD's. Working with hydrogen peroxide required thorough safety practices and adherence to standard operating procedures.

Cashier/Supervisor

Overwaitea Food Group - Save on Foods / Urban Fare

I've really enjoyed being a member of the Overwaitea Food Group. I've had the opportunity to experience many different departments and responsibilities during my time with them. I originally started as a cashier at Save-On-Foods. What drew me to the job was the opportunity to see and interact with a large amount of people on a daily basis. While working at Urban Fare, I gained experience in the restaurant, cafe, grocery, and produce departments. I was eventually given the responsibility of being in charge of the store during the closing hours. I learned valuable skills in communicating with people. giving direction, and placating disgruntled customers. My most recent position is cashier at Urban Fare in Coal Harbor, Vancouver, B.C.

Barista/Supervisor

The Boulevard Coffee Roasting Co.

I love making coffee. At The Boulevard we were trained how to properly pull espresso shots, steam milk to the correct temperature and textures, and create exceptional drinks. Great detail went into making both the food and beverages that were served at the store, and all coffee was roasted in house and served fresh. I enjoyed trying to master the perfect cappuccino. While working in the fast paced environment of the popular university coffee shop I became vary good at multitasking. In the supervisory position I was in charge of closing/opening the store and training new employees in the many daily chores.

Volunteer

Big Brothers Big Sisters

At big brothers big sisters I acted as a big brother to a young highschool boy without an older male influence in his life. We spent time trying to find new and fun things to do and participated in many of the group outings and events hosted by the organization.

Projects Abroad

I volunteered in a regional hospital and participated in a rural outreach program in Ghana, Africa. It was an amazing experience where I got my first real taste of being fully immersed in a different culture. I stayed with a host family who showed such kindness and taught me a little bit about how life was in the area I was posted. I rotated throughout different wards in the town's hospital during my month stay and got to witness the poverty and misfortune present in the area as well as the vibrancy and energy of its people. I assisted some of the doctors in minor tasks, witnessed surgeries, helped treat people in physiotherapy, and tried to take in as much as I could. Some of the most memorable moments were being there when the doctors had to give people life changing news about there health, and witnessing the compassion and relationships each doctor had with their patients. While I was not at the hospital I travelled to a number of popular locations throughout the region.

St john ambulance - therapy dog program

My dog Olie and I are regular visitors to Jubilee Lodge and the Rehabilitation Department at the University Hospital. He loves his visits there, and has made many friends. He even manages to jump up and share a bed with a few of the residence despite being 130lbs and taking up most of the bed himself.
